There are few schooling formats available in America,.

1. Tranditional public school - Free in general.
2. Traditional private school - You pay tuition
3. Government controled home school - It is free, Government dictates
what material you can use. You have to follow all the red tapes government request of you. This form of school also called charter school, but it is free.

Private home school - You decide what curricurum you want to use and you pay for it yourself. I am falling into this category. You do have to satisfy the minimun government regulation on this traditional home schooling. It could cost you lots money if you are not careful.

I spent very minimun amount of money on my 3 children's school curicurum after I start following the Ambleside Online curricurum. I found most of books free from

google.com
and
www.gutenberg.org

You can print the book out or read them from the computer.

About the critical thinking, I whole hearted agree with you. School education has long became an one-size-fit-all teacing. That did not satisfy me at all for my cildren's education.

I have been thinking hard and long for whatever aspects I can think of over te course of 6 years. I want my children to have free thinking and reasoning skills. History was written by the victory party not an indication of right from wrong but a reality.

For requesting my child to think independently, I found out tat they need to read and memorize many events/knowledge so they can think and compare with what they know from their knowledge base. We, the parent teacer, should discuss our thought and distinguish or even discriminate the information we present to them.

What I suggest is, when children are still young, teach them how to survive without depending on others. Such as how to prepare their own meals, where or how to get food, how to swim to the bank for live, how to use first aids kit when hurt, etc. Play is very important, Play with other children is one of the most important part of education. Don't equake this idea to 'socialize in school.' You really don't socialize in scool. You just listen to what your teacher talk or do what your teacer ask you to do alone with some chitchat with your classmate about what teacher say or do.

These are really wonderful sites which provide lots of material to help me educating my children. One serious problem here in Taiwan-education-system is that the kids don't develope critical thinking. They spent too much time on memorization. As a matter of fact, I encourage my children to criticize the content of textbooks such as history and social study. However, it seems not to work very well.

I am glad to see a site which can provide a systematic material. I need some time to digest them anyway.

On my first year of home schooling, I used a can curricurum from a very good school, Calvert. You can read their information on this link,

This curricurum will direct you a step a time on how to teach you child.
It worked out perfect for a then novice home school teacher.

When my teaching confidence grew over time, I found one thing lacking in this currucurm for my peace of mind. I wanted some spiritual enhancement in our schooling. So, I had been looking through the Well-Trained Mind, Waldorf, and Enki.

Hey, I just read about his news of home schooling in Taiwan. So, I now know that home schooling is called 在家自學 in Taiwan. Feel good.

I am going to add one more subjects in our home school.

教育基本理論是非常的必須，但是台灣的教育重點卻因為老師的不敬業，導致以唯以考卷來評定，現在敬業的老師還想進辦法出刁鑽的題來考驗學生，變成質普的學生吃虧。
在台灣，歷史與地理的教育變成一個漫天大謊話，教的是台灣沒有關係的中國歷史與地理，台灣只是一個地方名稱，學生不知道自己是台灣人，學生被教育是『中國人』，學生不知道『南港』在台北，『北港』在雲林（甚至成年人還會以為『北港』在嘉義），考試只重形式上的答案..標準答案，學生還是只需要背、不需要知道背後的原因，只要標準答案...。
而這些答案長就是被一些『中國人』意識下所定出來的，還好我這個『外省豬』是吃米飯長大的，也沒有備養在『豬欄』裡，久了也會講人話，也知道真理是什麼，今天我們才能在玉山裡遇見.....。

登山露營是一個相當好的活動，從目標的選定、路程規劃、器材設備食物的準備工作到落實執行，當中遇到的不可預期的狀況克服，辛苦的過程實際的一步一步完成，過程中認識土地、植物、山林，團隊合作的磨合，除了美好回憶，更可以訓練為了達成目標所需付堅強的意志精神。

I assumed that everyone knew what Home Schooling was. Maybe some of you were a little bit confused about the idea. I am going to do my best to explain it and with the language you guys know.

Home Schooling can be directly translated as 家庭學校. 也就是說在家上學 父母負擇課程走向. 父母可親自教學, 請家教, 或數個家庭互相分責教課. 你的學校就在你的家庭所在地 or 家庭活動場所.

我的小孩在早上學知識,下午和其小孩他玩 or 上音樂, 足球, 棒球, 等 若情況許可,我們帶小孩一起去談生意 so 小孩 可從小習慣生意記巧. 我們最近常去露營. 露營好玩並學求生技巧. 露營有時很累但使家庭關希緊密.

Typing non-English is eating up all the time I can spare. It took too long. Next time......

This fall is the extremely busy season in our life. We went on several family camping trips and several business trips. You see, this is a way of life, a home school life. It seems that it is just the way I grew up in Taiwan except my children say at home for education by my husband and I.

We value the precious time our children and we have together. We look forward to build financial freedom for our's and our children's generation.

A quick answer to the diploma issue. I keep a progress record for each child I home schooled. I evaluate my children's skill through various means, such as exam, oral discussion, writing, acting, etc. My children also take yearly official exam such as IOWA or ACT exam. Before they graduated from high school age, they will take SAT or PSAT. Colleges, even the colleges in Ivy Leagues, in the US are looking forward to have more home schooling kids in their student bodies. With your portfolios of progress records and scores from creditable exams, your children can apply for colleges normally. They can also apply for scholarship, too.

Diploma is very useful and important for at least 6 months after you graduate from college. After 6 months, your future depends on your various skills such as people skill, knowledge skill, work ethic, chance, etc.

My husband and my father-in-law were the first two people suggested homeschooling my children. Being brought up in Taiwan, I could not shake off the concept of 補習,聯考, best college, and high score myth. I rejected this idea at the beginning.

4+ years ago, I met a homeschool mom who was an ex-elementary teacher. After listening to her point of view of Home Schooling, I agree with her, and my husband and my FIL. So, I tried out to home school my first child.

4 years past now, I am teaching 3 children ages from 5 to 9 at home.

In America, home schooling is in almost mature stage. Government has very limited regulation against the specific schooling days and subjects covered. You, as the parents, will take your full responsibilities to set up your own curriculum for your household.

I have spending few time on checking into the possible Curriculum choices for us, the Taiwanese, to use in Taiwan. The lacking part is the presentation of Language Art and Taiwanese History.

From the limited knowledge I possessed, I think we should stop calling Traditional Chinese as Chinese. The UN has already defined that Chinese is the simplified Chinese not traditional Chinese. In my opinion, it will be in our benefit to create a totally different characters for Taiwanese. However, I am not very sure how that movement will progress. So, for now, we should adress traditional Chinese as Taiwanese. You see, somebody's waste is somebody's gold. Japanese is the successful eaxmple for this case.


It is difficult to do it from scratch but someone can start it. I am willing to
